Summer Institute in Dispute Resolution

Summer Institute in Dispute Resolution 2017The Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution at the William S. Boyd School of Law hosts a Summer Institute geared to give law or graduate students, attorneys, and other professionals the chance to take intensive short courses on dispute resolution in Las Vegas.

Courses, taught by experts in the field, offer either law school academic credits or Nevada CLE credits. This year’s offerings focus on the following:

COURSES

  • Mediation Representation

    Dates: May 16-19 (Tuesday-Friday) :  Noon to 6:00pm May 20 (Saturday):  10:00am-3:00pm

Harold Abramson Professor of Law, Touro Law Center, New York

This course covers how to settle legal disputes in negotiations and mediations-where most legal disputes are resolved. Students will learn how attorneys need to depart from their advocacy practices in the courtroom and employ distinctive practices suitable for the settlement room. This course examines the theoretical foundations for effective representation as well as gives students the opportunity to develop and practice the relevant skills. Students will first fashion appropriate negotiation approaches. Then students will examine how to enlist assistance from mediators and
develop and implement tailor-made mediation representation plans. The course gives special attention to the choices students should weigh when representing clients throughout the negotiation and mediation processes. This course is based on the professor’s award winning and widely used
book, Mediation Representation-Advocating as a Problem Solver (3d ed. 2013).

  • Negotiation

Dates: June 2/3, June 9/10, and June 16/17 (Fridays 2:30pm-7:00pm and Saturdays 11:00am-3:30p)

    Eleissa Lavelle, Adjunct Professor

This course examines the theory, practice, and skills used by attorneys as effective negotiators, whether in dispute resolution, transactional practice or planning contexts.

  • Mediation Essentials

    Dates: Aug 10 & 17 (Thursdays): 6:30pm to 9:30pm
    Aug 11, 12 & 18, 19 (Fridays / Saturdays): 8:00am to 4:30pm

    David Doto, Esq., LL.M.
